Summer Saturdays
July 5 - Aug. 9
Farm fun awaits families at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum during its annual Summer Saturdays series. From buggy rides and butterfly stations to goat feeding and storytelling, all ages can dig in and enjoy a bevy of activities from July 5 - Aug. 9. The schedule of activities includes:
• July 5: Farm Chores & Summer Fun Discover heirloom gardening secrets, watch spinners turn lamb’s wool into thread, shell corn for chickens, churn butter and more.
• July 12: Hold Your Horses! Enjoy a buggy ride, meet Tennessee Walking Horses, watch the Mounted Patrol train their equine partners and more.
• July 19: Old MacDonald’s Farm Groom and feed spotted mules and pint-sized donkeys, visit sheep, help the blacksmith and take a donkey ride ($3).
• July 26: All About Goats Feed and milk goats, enjoy storytelling, and get your face painted ($3).
• Aug. 2: Wild Wings & Creeping Things Learn about birds, butterflies and bugs from experts who study and protect them. Visit large birds of prey.
• Aug. 9: An Apple for the Teacher — Chicken for the Preacher! Sample apples from the orchard, learn to make an apple pomander and watch an artisan carve an apple-head doll. Visit the observation bee hive, and take home a lady bug activity book.

Uncle Dave Macon Days
July 11 - 13
Shine your dancin’ shoes for the 31st Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days, an old-time music and dance festival that’s fun for the whole family. Root for your favorite competitors in banjo, clogging and buckdancing. Visit the arts and crafts show and let the kids loose in the children’s area for period activities.

Saturday’s motorless parade, featuring horse- and mule-drawn carriages, is one of festival’s highlights. The free event takes place at Cannonsburgh Village, 312 S. Front St., Murfreesboro. Festivities begin Fri at 5 p.m., Sat at 9 a.m. and Sun at 2 p.m. Call 800-716-7560

Sumner County Fair
July 28 - Aug. 2
Old-fashioned family fun highlights this year’s Sumner County Fair. Take a spin on classic amusement rides, enjoy live music and visit competitors in livestock, baking and craft categories. Wednesday, July 30 is Children’s Day, with free admission for ages 15 and younger until 4:30 p.m.

The day also features a magic show and other activities including the Little Miss and Junior Miss Beauty Contests. The fair takes place at the Sumner County Fairgrounds, 200 Fairground Road, Gallatin. Operating hours vary daily. Admission is $3 ages 6 and older, free ages 5 and younger. Call 452-3172

TRY THESE FREE GREAT WAYS TO GET WET

The Gaylord Opryland Resort has a new Friday night ''Poolapalooza'' Pool Party at 6 p.m. on Fridays in June, where you (21 and older) can swim and listen to a poolside concert at the Cascades pool. The first one is this Friday featuring BMI Songwriter of the Year Jeffrey Steele. The party is free and so is parking. 1-888-672-0091.

Most of our area lake beaches charge a $4 per car access fee, but Lock 3 Beach on Old Hickory Lake off Walton Ferry Road in Hendersonville is free all the time, and has a swimming beach and picnic tables. 822-4846.

Enjoy some water fun at the Don Fox Community Park, 955 Baddour Parkway in Lebanon, where there's a wading pool designed for young children, water umbrellas and other fun spraying features. There's a 2½-mile paved trail, a track, an exercise station and plenty of picnic tables. 449-0303. We have been there and it is fun to meet a bunch of people there.

Take a free canoe float on Radnor Lake. This Otter Creek Road state park offers night hikes, early morning and evening canoe floats and miles of lovely wooded trails to explore. 373-3467

 

Farmers Market Free Fun

Make a trip to the Nashville Farmers' Market at 900 Eighth Ave. N. It's fun to walk the stalls outside and enjoy the restaurants inside. And it's also a good place to take pictures, with blooming flowers or luscious fresh fruit as a backdrop. The market's Summer Grill Party on July 19 and the Ugly Tomato Festival is Aug. 16. The Hendersonville Mc Donalds on Monday and Wednesday have a small cheeseburger and fries for $1.00. You have to ask for the special since it is not posted anywhere.
